Net cafés have captured attention of young generation in Pakistan , after its mushroom growth throughout country. The amazing business , has inbuilt marketing attraction , youngsters have very easy excess to the porn web sites without any hindrance . In the 80s, the easiest way to keep your unruly son employed was to open up a PCO (Public Call Office) in the neighborhood. You rent a shop/ room, install a phoneline, a desk and a chair. People come and pay you 10 rupees to make a phone call. Later , PCOs were converted into internet access points (no beverages are served on premises) by late 90s. In 1998, a rough survey of Lahore produced an average on 10-12 cafés per neighborhoods. Now, that ratio is to one per street. It is also observed during a survey , the couples are usual customers of the netcafes , which are established near some educational institutions. The sexual frustration in the Pakistan community is at its top, due to multiple reasons, which include non-availability of catharsis of emotions, injustices and anxiety. Google, the world’s most popular Internet search engine, has found in a survey that mostly Muslim states seek access to sex-related websites and Pakistan tops the list. Google found that of the top 10 countries - searching for sex-related sites - six were Muslim, with Pakistan on the top. The other Muslim countries are Egypt at number 2, Iran at 4, Morocco at 5, Saudi Arabia at 7 and Turkey at 8. Non-Muslim states are Vietnam at 3, India at 6, Philippines at 9 and Poland at 10.
Few years back , a modern net café has been established, the owner constructed tiny but sound proof cabins, placed computers in them, put a screen door with locks on the inside, installed lights in the ceiling and hidden in the lights, installed cameras. The owner has market its netcafe in colleges and nearby schools with special packages. Immediately after grand opening, young men and women started to get advance bookings. They came alone or as couples, went into the cabins and viewed porn websites on the computers. The owner of the modern cafe recorded these activities by hidden cams and later forced them to blackmail and utilized them for own sexual desires and money. Reportedly he trapped more than 25 couples. A CD was prepared and exported to Dubai and Western countries , where it sold for about $100,000. Copies were made and sold in Britain, US, France and Germany and finally, made their way back home. In the beginning, these CDs were sold for four or five thousand rupees in Lahore and Islamabad. A gang got hold of the CD and tracked down the 25 families of the couples. To fulfill their vicious designs they delivered the CDs to those houses. This caused an instant firestorm. Reportedly Three of the girls in the scandal committed suicide, one was killed by her father. Two were divorced . While mostly the boys ran away from their houses. Some of the young men on the CD belonged to very prominent families of Rawalpindi. The blackmailers continued to harass the families and minted huge money.
Last year, Islamabad Police recovered narcotics from a net café (Scorpio Gaming Café) in F-8 Markaz by conducting a raid on the complaint of a mother and arrested two employees while the owner managed to escape from the scene leaving his 10-year-old son behind.
Reportedly, the owner of the net cafe stated to be an influential bureaucrat Dr Zafar Lodhi, deputy director of National Project of World Food Programme under the Ministry of Health. A large number of youths, most of them students, have become a narcotic addict. The complainant said that her young son was also among the victims of the narcotics. The ‘mother’ pointed out the place where the narcotics were hidden.
Police recovered considerable quantity of heroine, charas and hashish from the net café.
It is believed that there are thousands of Net Cafés in this country. In which a ‘romantic ‘cabins have been established . Young boys and girls from colleges and universities go to these cafés, porn websites and CDs are being viewed , allegedly with the connivance of local police . Most of the young couples are exposed to malicious designs of blackmailers . There are, reportedly well organized gangs operating not only in netcafes but also young couples including new honey spouses are being trapped in hotel rooms , and being recorded by hidden cams. Such desi videos have very good market in Dubai and the West. A survey , revealed that Desi porn stuff recorded in a natural way , has very high rates in international markets. These CDs and clips are even available on Porn sites , the owners of whom charged heavily from their customers and running a well-established business. The society representative and the government have to pay serious attention, to curb the social evil. There are thousands of software in the world that eliminate obscene websites. The Pakistan government, in letter and spirit , should install these filters on all internet services, register all Net Cafés, issue license of operations, impound unlicensed sites, and ban the use of cameras in all such facilities. Un fortunately E-Crimes are so far considered as politically motivated and at the surface very vague. Ministry of Science and Technology failed to devise a strategy to enforce a code of Ratings on the websites, which may prohibit morally corrupt sites and movies in the public places.
Reportedly some stores and tailors shop have installed cameras in their “try rooms”. Some export these films overseas and exploit the females . The government should also pass laws against cameras in changing rooms. Places where cameras are installed should notify the customers via a public sign board. I have seen many places in Europe, America and Canada where they are installed as traffic camers. In USA, it is against the law to record any image or movie without permission even voice recording. In America, even a president, Richard Nixon, lost his government when he secretly taped his opponents but there os no such laws in our country. People have put secret cameras and recorders everywhere and their phone calls even are taped and used later for blackmail. No one knows how many houses have been destroyed by this and be continued to be destroyed.
